Benefits of Stevia

Anti Hyperglycaemic

International Journal of Crop Science and Technology,  Volume 2, Issue 2, 2016, Page: 45-59 Stevia has a revitalising effect on the beta cells of pancreas, also improves insulin sensitivity and promotes additional insulin production. Several Studies have shown that extracts of Stevia rebaudiana leaves could increase glucose tolerance in humans. Therefore stevia may be advantageous in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (Jeppesen et al., 2006, Chen et al., 2005, Anton et al., 2010, Gregersen et al., 2004 and Barriocanal et al., 2008).

Helps in Weight Loss

Stevia is essentially calorie- and carb Free. Because it’s so much sweeter than sugar, the small amounts used add no meaningful calories or carbs to your diet. Because it’s calorie-free, it help you loose your weight without missing your favourite deserts, cakes or sweet Tea /Coffee. DIVINE Leaves STEVIA Zero calorie Sweetener has Zero Calories or Carbohydrates, reducing your calorie intake substantially as compared to regular sugar, which provides about 45 calories per tablespoon (12 grams). Stevia may also help you stay full on fewer calories .

Rich in Anti-Oxidants

Free radicals are considered to be the causative agents in the development of neurological diseases, reduced immunity, inflammations, ageing, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease as well as cancer. Stevia is potential source of antioxidants. Several antioxidants were obtained from the extracts of Stevia rebaudiana, which include kaempferol. Quereitrin and Opigenin that protect DNA strand damage. Isosteviol inhibits angiotensin II induced cell proliferation and endothelin I secretion while attenuation of reactive oxygen species generation. Hence it could be beneficial in many diseases like cancer, reproductive problems and developmental defects.

Tooth Friendly

The ability of Stevia to inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria and other infectious organisms makes it ideal choice for mouthwash and toothpaste products. Tadhani M. B. and Subhash R. (2006) reported that Streptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas aeruginos, Proteus vulgaris and other microbes do not thrive in the presence of the nonnutritive Stevia constituents. When sugar is consumed it interacts with the bacteria within the plaque to produce acid. This acid is responsible for tooth decay because it slowly dissolves the enamel creating holes or cavities in the teeth. Tooth decay can lead to tooth abscesses, which may result in the tooth having to be removed but as DIVINE leaves Stevia Sweetener has Zero Sugar, Stevia sweetened candies and desserts do not induce tooth decay thereby reducing chances of dental Caries.

Rich in Nutrients

Stevia Plant is a rich source of various nutrients. Many studies have conformed that Stevia leaf have rich nutritive ingredients such as Nine Essential Amino Acids (Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Lysine, Isoleucine, Serine, Alanine, Proline, Methionine, Tyrosine), Water-soluble Vitamins (Folic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2),Active Phytochemicals (steviol, austroinullin, β-carotene, rebaudi oxides, dulcoside, nilacin, stevioside, riboflavin and thiamine) ,Minerals (Calcium, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium and zinc)

Anti-Bacterial

In some antimicrobial activity screening studies, Stevia extracts exhibited susceptibility enough to inhibit the growth of certain pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Aeromonas hydrophila

Anti-Fungal

Stevia extract has been found to be effective against Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, Alternaria solani. Fusarium oxysporum showed maximum zone of inhibition by methanolic plant extracts of Stevia rebaudiana in the study of Arya et al. (2012). Therefore, plant extracts and phytochemicals with known antimicrobial properties can be of great significance in therapeutic treatments. There are evidences that presence of phytochemicals in leaves might have contributed to the antifungal activity.

Anti Cancer

Although research is still in early stages but some researches conducted on mice indicate Four isolates of steviol glycoside - stevioside, rebaudiosides A & C and ducloside A from Stevia rebaudiana have a strong inhibitory effect on 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) induced inflammation in mice which is suggestive of its anticancer effect. (Raskovic et al., 2004 and Yasukawa, 2002, Yasukawa et al 2006)
